Staircases We Install Glass Railings On
Straight Flights
One run, floor to floor, and the most common stair we glaze. Every panel is cut to the same rake angle, which makes this the simplest and least expensive glass stair railing to fabricate.
The decision that matters is where the glass stops at the top. Carrying it past the last riser onto the landing edge reads as one continuous run rather than two separate railings meeting at a corner.
L-Shaped with a Landing
A flight, a landing, then a turn. The landing guard is vertical and the flight guard is raked, so the two meet at an angle that has to be resolved in the panel layout rather than on site.
This is where a measuring error shows most, because a mismatch at the landing corner is visible from both floors at once.
U-Shaped and Switchback
Two flights running opposite directions with a mid-level landing between them. Common in Bay Area homes on narrow lots where a straight run will not fit the footprint.
Glass earns its cost here more than anywhere. A switchback with picket railings on both flights reads as a solid wall of vertical bars from below, and the same stair in glass stays open.
Curved and Spiral
Curved glass panels are made to a specific radius, formed rather than cut, which puts them in a different price and lead time bracket. On a gentle curve we can sometimes use faceted flat panels instead, which costs considerably less.
We will tell you at the estimate which of the two your stair can take. It is the single largest cost fork on this page.
Open-Riser and Floating Stairs
Stairs with no risers, or treads cantilevered off a wall or a central stringer. The guard has to be carried without a continuous solid stringer to anchor into, so the fixing detail is worked out with whoever built the stair.
Open-riser stairs carry their own opening limits under code, and the layout is checked against them before anything is fabricated.
Mezzanines and Stairwell Edges
The upper-floor guard that runs around a stairwell opening, whether or not the stair itself gets glass. Doing the two together is what makes an open plan actually read as open.
This run is vertical rather than raked, so it fabricates like a balcony guard and often costs less per foot than the stair beside it.

The Rake Is the Whole Job
We template rather than measure
On a stair we take a physical template of the run instead of writing down dimensions. Stringers are rarely perfectly straight, risers vary by a few millimetres over a flight, and a landing corner is almost never exactly 90 degrees. A tape measure records what the stair should be. A template records what it is.
That is why the measure visit on a stair takes longer than on a deck, and why we will not quote a stair from a photograph or a floor plan alone.
Nothing is adjustable on install day
Tempered glass is cut, edged, and heat treated in that order. Once it leaves the oven the panel is finished: it cannot be shortened, notched, or re-drilled. A panel cut a quarter inch out is a panel that gets remade, and that is another fabrication cycle.
So the time on a stair goes into getting the layout right before anything is ordered. It is the part of the job you never see, and it is the reason a stair takes longer to reach install than a deck of the same length.
The handrail question
Code treats the guard and the handrail as two separate things on a stair, and glass sorts them differently depending on the system. A slim metal rail capped along the top of the glass satisfies both at once and keeps the run reading as a single line. A wall-mounted rail on the closed side leaves the glass entirely uninterrupted, which is the cleaner look and the more common choice on an open stairwell.
The choice is not only cosmetic. A guard built without a continuous top rail has to use laminated glass so the panel stays in place if it breaks. We settle this at design rather than at install, so it never becomes a surprise at inspection.
What California Code Requires on a Stair
Guard height
California requires guards to reach 42 inches, measured from the walking surface. This applies to the landing and the stairwell edge.
Stair guard exception
On the open side of a stair the guard may drop to not less than 34 inches, measured vertically from the imaginary line connecting the tread nosings.
Handrail height
Handrails sit between 34 and 38 inches above the nosing line. Where the glass carries a top rail that doubles as the handrail, that rail lands in this band.
When a handrail is required
A handrail is required on at least one side of any flight with four or more risers. Most residential flights clear that easily.
Openings
No opening in the guard may pass a 4-inch sphere. At the triangular gap formed by the riser, the tread, and the bottom rail, a 6-inch sphere applies instead.
Load
Guards carry a 50 pound per linear foot distributed load and a 200 pound concentrated load at any point along the top, plus seismic loads in California.
Graspable handrail
A circular handrail has to be between 1¼ and 2 inches in outside diameter, with at least 1½ inches of clearance where it is mounted to a wall.
Tempered or laminated
Guard glazing must be safety glass. Where there is no continuous top rail, code calls for laminated so the panel stays in place if it breaks.
Permit and inspection
Most Bay Area jurisdictions require a permit when a stair guard is added or replaced. Requirements vary by city and county, and some are stricter than the state minimum.
Glass and Hardware Options
Glass
Tempered is the baseline, laminated where there is no continuous top rail. Ultra-clear low-iron is worth considering on a stair more than anywhere else in the house: standard glass carries a faint green cast in the polished edge, and on a stair you look at those edges straight on, at eye level, from the landing.

Hardware Finishes
Interior stairs are the one application where marine-grade stainless is usually unnecessary, because there is no salt air and no weather. Standard brushed stainless or a powder coat holds up indefinitely indoors and costs less.
On an exterior stair, specify marine grade the same as you would on a deck. The exception is not the location, it is the exposure.

Five things that change the price
- Curved or straight. Curved panels are formed to a radius rather than cut, and they sit in a different price and lead time bracket entirely.
- Number of turns. Each landing corner is a separate panel geometry, so a switchback costs more per foot than a straight run of the same length.
- Handrail approach. A rail capped along the glass costs more than a wall-mounted rail on the closed side.
- Stringer condition. The stringer has to carry the anchoring load, and glass concentrates more force into fewer points than pickets do.
- Glass specification. Laminated and low-iron both cost more than standard tempered, and on a stair both are often worth it.

The disadvantages of glass stair railings
We install these for a living and we would still rather you hear this now than after the invoice. Glass is the most expensive of the three guard materials, and on a stair it is also the one that shows fingerprints most, because a stair railing is the one railing in the house that people actually touch every day. Expect to wipe it more often than you would a deck panel, and expect it to look worse than a picket railing does when you skip a week.
Three more things worth knowing before you commit. Tempered glass cannot be adjusted on site, and a stair is the least forgiving place for a measuring error, which is why we template rather than measure. A panel that gets broken years later is a fabrication order rather than a trip to a hardware store, so plan on weeks rather than days if it ever happens. And on a switchback or an open stairwell, a full-height glass run reflects the lights above it at night, which some people love and some find distracting.

How long it takes
Plan on 3 to 6 weeks from signed contract to completed installation on a straight or L-shaped stair. Fabrication is the longest stretch, because every panel is cut to the rake of your stair and treated after cutting.
A curved stair runs longer, because formed panels are made to a radius rather than cut from stock. We give you a firm date at the template stage rather than at the estimate.
Keeping it clear
A stair railing gets touched more than any other railing in the house, so fingerprints are the maintenance item rather than weather. Most homeowners wipe the handrail side weekly with a mild glass cleaner and do a full both-sides clean monthly.
Skip abrasive pads and ammonia-heavy cleaners on coated glass. A microfibre cloth and a spray bottle handles a full flight in a few minutes.
